The Maple River Hardwood Classic began in 2010. The Classic was meant to bring uncommon opponents from throughout the state together to get high-quality competition for each team participating as well as entertain the fans with great early-season basketball!

 2010 – THE INAUGURAL TOURNAMENT

The first Maple River Hardwood Classic had three different teams (Byron, Maple River, Kenyon-Wanamingo) in the tournament that were ranked at one point during the year. In game 1, Byron put on a defensive show that would go down in the record books holding LeSueur-Henderson to 27 points. Byron limited LSH to 27.9% from the field en route to the easy 56-27 victory. Senior Evan Morris paced the Bears with 19 points and 5 rebounds. In the nightcap on day 1, Maple River outlasted KW 58-56. In a game that was see-saw throughout, the Eagles were able to force 21 KW turnovers to win. Junior Josiah Breiter came off the bench to score 13 points for the Eagles. In the finals, two ranked teams went head-to-head in the early season classic. Maple River was able to hold Byron to 39.3% shooting and prevailed 62-58 for the first championship. During the first classic, the Saturday portion of the tournament was postponed due to inclement weather. The Championship game between Maple River and Byron was played the following Saturday, while the third-place game between Kenyon-Wanamingo and LeSueur-Henderson was played in Kenyon on December 23rd. The final records for the inaugural teams that participated in the Classic were: Byron 19-9, Maple River 24-6, Kenyon-Wanamingo 19-7, and LeSueur-Henderson 9-16. Maple River went on to the Section Finals while Byron and Kenyon-Wanamingo both fell in their Sub-Section Finals. LSH fell in the opening round of the playoffs.

 2011 – MAPLE RIVER WINS REMATCH

The 2011 Hardwood Classic again pitted 3 teams (WEM, Windom Area, Maple River) in the polls. In the opening game, WEM used their full-court pressure to dominate the defending Section 3AA champion, Windom Area Eagles 66-43 forcing a tournament record 28 turnovers. Senior Tate Harmon led WEM with 17 points while Senior Grant Pope added 16 points, 8 assists and 5 rebounds. The Bucs led 35-17 at halftime. In game 2, after a sluggish first half, Maple River dominated Kasson-Mantorville winning 61-36 behind Junior Jaron Denn’s 23 points. Senior Josiah Breiter added 10 points and 8 rebounds in the win. The Eagles held the Komets to just 23.6% from the field. In the championship game before a raucous crowd, the Eagles defended their 2010 championship with a 65-60 hard-fought win. The title tilt was a rematch of the 2010-11 Section 2AA final which WEM captured. Breiter dominated the paint with a 22 point, 11 rebound performance. Denn added 16 points while WEM stars Grant Pope and Tate Harmon had 21 and 20 points, respectively. The final season records for the teams were: Waterville-Elysian-Morristown 26-3, Maple River 20-8, Windom Area 15-11 and Kasson-Mantorville 21-6. WEM made it to the Sub-Section finals before falling to St. Peter. Maple River lost in the sub-section semi-finals while KM lost in the first round of the playoffs. Windom Area lost in the sub-section semi-finals.

 2012 - #1 Litchfield Prevails

The 2012 Hardwood Classic saw the pre-season #1 ranked team, Litchfield Dragons, open the Classic with a 54-45 victory over Hayfield. Litchfield led 27-17 at the break and methodically maintained the lead throughout the second half. Zach Kinny led the Dragons with 14 points, 11 rebounds, and 6 assists. Trevor Anderson had 14 points for Hayfield, but the Vikings only shot 34% from the field in the loss. In the nightcap, Maple River stormed back from a 9 point halftime deficit to defeat Cannon Falls 65-55. Seniors Jaron Denn and Ben Larson had 12 points apiece to pace the Eagles. Maple River shot just 10 of 24 from the line but outrebounded Cannon Falls 34-26. Brock Peterson came off the bench for the Bombers to score a game-high 18. In the finals, Litchfield overcame a 6-point deficit with 7 minutes to play to win the 3rd annual classic championship. The Dragons Zach Whitchurch hit 3 consecutive three-point shots in the decisive run to propel them to the title. Whitchurch finished the game with game-highs of 25 points and 9 rebounds. Dylan Koll added 17 points and 7 assists for Litchfield. Maple River was led by Denn’s 18 points. Litchfield hit 12 of 27 threes while the Eagles shot just 7 of 30 from downtown. The final season records for the team involved in the Classic were: Litchfield 26-6, Maple River 24-5, Hayfield 22-8, and Cannon Falls 18-11. Cannon Falls and Maple River both fell in their Sub-Section Finals while Hayfield and Litchfield both made the State Tournament. Hayfield defeated Maple River in the Sub-Section Finals 57-55 and Litchfield made their 2nd straight State Championship game before falling to Minnehaha Academy 56-54.

 2013 – Mayer Lutheran gets Hot

For the first time in Classic history, Maple River played the early game on the first day and came away with a 65-55 victory over Jackson County Central after leading 35-21 at halftime. The Eagles outrebounded the Huskies 35-23 and forced 17 turnovers in the win. Sophomore Will Keller led Maple River with 20 points while Junior Jonah Breiter added 17 points and 6 rebounds. The Huskies were led by Senior Jon Harmening’s double-double of 18 points and 14 rebounds. The pre-season #1 ranked team in the state was in the classic again. #1 ranked Minnehaha Academy met its match in the opening round as Mayer Lutheran connected on 53.1% of their shots en route to a 70-62 win after leading comfortably 41-23 at the break. Anthony Gruenhagen scored 28 points on 11 of 16 shooting to lead the Crusaders. Minnehaha Academy was led by freshman Simeon Davis with 18 points. The Redhawks committed 24 turnovers in the loss. In the championship game, Mayer Lutheran kept their hot shooting going as they connected on their first 5 three-point attempts and never looked back defeating Maple River 65-51. The Eagles shot just 34.9% from the field and made only 4 of 15 from three-point land. Mayer Lutheran hit 10 threes and collected 12 offensive rebounds in the win. The final season records for the teams involved in the classic were: Mayer Lutheran 18-6, Maple River 11-15, Minnehaha Academy 15-14, Jackson County Central 17-10. Minnehaha Academy fell in the sub-section finals. Maple River lost in the opening round of the playoffs while Jackson County lost in the Sub-Section Semi-Finals. Mayer Lutheran lost in the sub-section semi-finals.

 2014 – Eagles Outlast Minnehaha

The 2014 classic began with Maple River flying past the Blue Earth Area Bucs 71-54 after taking a commanding 32-19 halftime lead. Grant Sonnek paced the Eagles with 23 points and 13 rebounds while Jonah Breiter added 16 points and 9 rebounds. Conor Barnett led BEA with 18 points. The Eagles shot just 2 of 17 from three but outrebounded BEA 45-25. In the other semi-final, Minnehaha Academy streaked past Jordan 74-55. Minnehaha Academy led 37-26 at the break. JaVonni Bickham had 17 points and 16 rebounds for the Redhawks. 7th grader Jalen Suggs came off the bench to score 16. For the Jordan Hubmen, Mitchell Peterson had 13 points and 4 assists. Minnehaha made 47.3% of their field goals while holding Jordan to 37.5% shooting. In the 3rd place game, Jordan opened up an early lead and coasted to an 85-74 win over Blue Earth Area. Jimmy Vollbrecht led the way with 31 points and 10 rebounds as the Hubmen shot a blistering 60% from the field. BEA was led by Bailey Olson’s 28 points and 12 rebounds. In the Championship game, Maple River forced 20 Minnehaha Academy turnovers and shot 51.2% from the field en route to the title. Jonah Breiter led the way with 26 points. Jalen Suggs had 20 for the Redhawks. Maple River converted 22 of 32 free throws. The final season records for the teams involved in the classic were: Blue Earth Area 6-20, Maple River 28-5, Minnehaha Academy 19-9, Jordan 20-7. Jordan made the Section 2AA North Sub-Section championship game, while Maple River won Section 2AA en route to a final four-state tournament appearance.

2015 – Monte Holds on Against Eagles

The 2015 Classic began with a dominating defensive performance from the Eagles. Maple River held LSH to 22.4% shooting and 16 points in each half on way to a 75-32 victory. Brandon Sohre and Cole Sohre led the way with 15 points. LSH was paced by Tyler Eccles with 10 points. In the 2nd semi-final, Montevideo built a 26-14 halftime lead en route to a 61-49 victory over Cannon Falls. Montevideo shot a blistering 53.5% while holding Cannon Falls to just 33.3% shooting overall. Montevideo was led by Troy Diggins and Travis Dreyer with 15 points apiece. Cannon Falls was led by Tanner Carlson with 17 points and 4 assists. In the 3rd place game, Cannon Falls led 30-23 at the break on their way to a 68-60 victory over LeSueur-Henderson. Kyler Banks led the way for Cannon Falls with 15 points. LSH was led by Tyler Eccles with 19 points and 5 rebounds. Cannon Falls forced 27 LSH turnovers. In the finals, Montevideo stormed out to a 16-4 lead and held on for the 51-49 win. The Eagles 3-point attempt at the horn rimmed out. Troy Diggins led Montevideo with 18 points and 8 rebounds while Maple River was led by Will Keller’s 16 point, 7 rebound performance. The final season records for the teams involved in the classic: LeSueur-Henderson 12-14, Maple River 27-4, Cannon Falls 17-12, Montevideo 21-8. Maple River won section 2AA and fell to eventual state Champion Braham in the state quarterfinals. Montevideo fell in OT in the Section 3AA finals and Cannon Falls lost in the Sub-Section 1AA finals. LSH lost in the first round of the playoffs to St. Peter.

2016 – St. Cloud Cathedral blows past BP

The 2016 Hardwood Classic began with a hard-fought re-match of the Section 2 Finals from the season before between Maple River and Belle Plaine. After trailing by 3 at the break, Belle Plaine stormed back to win 72-60 behind 9-19 shooting from beyond the arc. Brody Curtiss scored 18 for the Tigers while four others were also in double figures. Wyatt Johnson led Maple River with 18 points. In the 2nd semi-final game, St. Cloud Cathedral rolled to a 93-71 victory over Redwood Valley. Michael Schaefer scored a Classic record 41 points on 16-26 shooting. He also grabbed a game-high 15 rebounds. James Pendleton scored 34 for the Cardinals of Redwood Valley. The Crusaders led 52-42 at the break in a fast-paced up and down game. On Saturday, the 3rd place game was decided in the final seconds as the Eagles outlasted the Cardinals 84-81 behind Cole Sohre’s 33 points on 11 of 17 shooting. Jeff Lewis added 24 points and 10 assists in the game. Cole Woodford led the way for Redwood Valley with 26 points. In the finals, St. Cloud Cathedral dominated the 2nd half after leading 37-29 at the break en route to a convincing 93-68 win. Schaefer continued his outstanding tournament scoring 29 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Mitchell Plombon added 23 points and 10 rebounds. Brody Curtiss led the way for Belle Plaine with 32 points. The St. Cloud Cathedral Crusaders outrebounded the Tigers 38-21 and shot 54.1% from the floor. The final season records for the teams involved in the classic were: Redwood Valley 15-13, Maple River 20-8, Belle Plaine 14-14, St. Cloud Cathedral 26-7. St. Cloud Cathedral went on to win their Section en route to a final four finish at the state tournament. Maple River fell to eventual Section champion NRHEG in the sub-section semi-final. Belle Plaine also lost in the sub-section semi-final to Jordan while Redwood Valley fell in their sub-section semi-final game to Pipestone Area.

2017 – PEM Bulldogs Dominate Field

Plainview-Elgin-Millville started the 2017 classic fast and furious outscoring Sibley East 37-26 in the first half. PEM held the lead throughout as senior guard Barron Holtz paced the Bulldogs with 21 points and 9 assists. Junior forward Griffin Doughty added 20 for PEM. For the Wolverines from Sibley East, seniors Austin Weckwerth (14 points) and Gavin Bates (12 points, 16 rebounds) led the way. In the 2nd Semi-Final, Maple River got a lay-up from Sam Bennett in the final seconds to defeat Cannon Falls 57-55. Bennett led the way with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Ryan Dirckx led Cannon Falls with 21 points and 5 rebounds. On Saturday, the 3rd place game saw Sibley East come back from a double-figure deficit to nip the Cannon Falls Bombers 58-56. Bates had a monster game with 34 points and 7 rebounds. Dirckx led the Bombers with 20 points and 7 rebounds. In the championship game, PEM raced to a 48-25 lead over Maple River and won in dominating fashion 94-54. PEM forced the Eagles into 24 turnovers in the easy victory. PEM shot a blistering 59.4% from the field. Barron Holtz led 4 Bulldogs in double figures with 28 points. PEM had 23 assists and just 9 team turnovers. The final season records for the teams involved in the classic: Sibley East 20-9, Maple River 20-10, Cannon Falls 11-16, Plainview-Elgin-Millville 19-8. Maple River won their sub-section prior to being beaten in the section finals by Jordan. Sibley East lost in the sub-section finals to Jordan. PEM was defeated in the 2nd round while Cannon Falls fell in the opening playoff game to St. Charles.

2018 – Dover-Eyota Wins Title

Dover-Eyota began the classic with a narrow 69-63 victory over Glencoe-Silver Lake. The DE Eagles shot 47.6% from the floor for the game in the victory. DE led GSL 32-23 at halftime and never relinquished the lead in the 2nd frame despite a valiant effort from the Panthers. DE held GSL to 38.2% shooting from the field. GSL was led by Mitchel Jaskowiak with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Jack Studer led DE with 29 points while junior Brady Williams added 23 points and 7 rebounds. In the 2nd game of the first evening, Maple River overcame a slight 1-point deficit to defeat Tri-City United 63-53. Maple River shot a blistering 64.1%, but committed 20 turnovers in the victory. The TCU Titans shot just 31.0% for the game. Maple River was led by senior Mason Sohre with 18 points. TCU was led by Tyler Budin’s 22 points and 9 rebounds. On Saturday in the third-place game, GSL stormed out to a 13-point advantage at halftime and held on late defeating TCU 58-51. TCU shot just 29% for the game and committed 22 turnovers. GSL only hit 2 of 19 from three, but took advantage of 21 free throw attempts, hitting 16. Mitchel Jaskowiak led the way for the Panthers with 18 points and 10 rebounds In the championship game, the Eagles from Dover-Eyota overwhelmed the Eagles from Maple River winning 62-38 with a dominating defensive performance. DE held Maple River to 25.4% shooting and forced 18 turnovers. DE shot 47.3% from the field in the championship victory. DE was led by Brady Williams again with 21 points and 15 rebounds. Maple River was led by Mason Sohre with 16 points and 5 rebounds. The final season records for the teams involved in the classic: Tri-City United 1-25, Maple River 9-19, Cannon Falls 17-11, Dover-Eyota 19-8. TCU lost in the opening round of the playoffs to Jordan. Maple River fell to section champion St. Peter in the Sub-Section semi-finals. Dover-Eyota lost to Caledonia in the 2nd round of the playoffs. GSL fell to Jordan in the finals of the Sub-Section.

2019 – Bombers Run Away With Championship

Cannon Falls and Belle Plaine squared off in the opener of the 2019 Hardwood Classic with the Bombers of Cannon Falls racing to a 34-20 halftime lead. Cannon Falls would extend the lead in the second half as the pace of play picked up. The Tigers of Belle Plaine could not carve into the halftime margin much and Cannon Falls advanced with an 80-53 win. The Bombers forced 26 Belle Plaine turnovers and held the Tigers to 37.1% shooting. The Bombers only connected on 37.7% of their shots but connected on 9 of 30 three-point attempts in the win. Luke Sjoquist led the way with 20 points while Drew Otte added 16 points and 7 rebounds. The Tigers lone double-figure scorer was Noah Schumacher with 10 points. In the 2nd game of the night, the Saints of St James upended the host Eagles 77-75 behind a barrage of three-point shots hitting 12 of 28. Logan Carlson was outstanding for the Saints hitting 8 of 11 three’s en route to a game-high 35 points. Hayden Jones added 16 points and 11 rebounds for the Saints. Maple River was paced by Lucas Doering’s 16 points. Teien Murphy added 12 points and 11 rebounds. In the 3rd place game, Maple River outlasted the Belle Plaine Tigers 72-69. Maple River converted 27 of 40 free throw attempts and forced 18 turnovers in the win. Both teams connected on 5 three-pointers. Teien Murphy led the way for Maple River with 14 points and 12 rebounds while freshman Aidan Sindelir came off the bench to contribute 13 points. Dylan Kahle led the Tigers with 16 points and 9 rebounds. In the title game, St James 3’s weren’t dropping as they connected on just 8 of 34 beyond the arc, and Cannon Falls forced 17 Saint turnovers in winning 89-62. The Bombers led 45-34 at halftime. Luke Sjoquist led the way with 29 points, while Otte added 19 points and 8 rebounds. Nick Bultena added 12 off the bench for the Bombers. Jones led St James with 24 points and 10 rebounds while Carlson scored 20. The Final season records for the teams involved in the classic: St James 6-20, Maple River 13-15, Cannon Falls 17-10, Belle Plaine 15-12. St James lost to Luverne in the first round of the playoffs. Cannon Falls dropped a tough game to PEM in their first round. Belle Plaine fell in the 2nd round to Minnesota Valley Lutheran, while Maple River advanced to the second round and fell to Blue Earth Area.
